Opera in the Park Picnic

Sunday 7 June
To celebrate the opening of their summer season, Cincinnati Opera gave a free performance in Washington Park today, so we threw a couple of folding chairs and a picnic basket into the car, drove down early (leaving time for parking and getting lost), and found ourselves a spot on the grass among a friendly crowd.
If you smoke two chickens, and eat half of one, that leaves a whole lot of smoked chicken that you still have to eat.  That's mathematics.  So for our main picnic dish, we made a salad out of tender bits picked from yesterday's two chickens (saving the carcasses for broth), chunks of the single leftover avocado, chopped scallion, mayonnaise, a touch of cider vinegar, and a pinch of pimenton de la Vera.  And if it's a bit repetitive of yesterday's excellent meal, so what?

Holt had also baked four little pane Pugliese yesterday, so we had slices of the fresh bread to make open-faced sandwiches with.  And of course, a thermos full of well-aged grape juice.

For dessert, to the tantalization of those seated around us, we feasted on the latest crop of garden strawberries, as mentioned last Wednesday.
We have no idea whether Yogi Bear and Boo-boo enjoyed opera, but we all enjoy a good pic-a-nic basket, especially one filled with just-picked strawberries.
