Thursday March 21
After chasing around the
Washington metro complex for the past five days, we were able to take a laziness
break and stay off our pins today (except for a brisk walk out to lunch at the
Pita House with Ginger - and we'll walk almost anywhere if there's food at the
end of it).
Strangely enough, we were hungry
again when Vaden got back from work, so she laid out a platter of various cheeses
and salami, accompanied by a nice pinot noir.
As the evening wore on, Ginger got into the kitchen, and almost
immediately delicious smells filled the air.
They proved to issue from the main dish, collops of monkfish with asparagus in soothing butter broth, from
this month's Cucina Italiana.
On the side was a pea and peashoot
salad with kumquats and pine nuts, and a Casillero del Diablo chardonnay from
Concha y Toro.
The meal ended triumphantly with
toasted pound cake topped with lemon and olive oil custard (!) and blueberries
like little polka dots. So creative,
festive, and did I mention tasty? So
thanks, Ginger and Vaden!
