Founding Farmers, Washington

Tuesday March 19
Tonight we went to GWU for a fascinating AIA lecture by our friend Bob Ousterhout, on the theme of his new book John Henry Haynes: A Photographer and Archaeologist in the Ottoman Empire  (obvious plug).
And as a treat afterwards, we, Lisa, and our friend Eric went out to Founding Farmers.
This is obviously the hot spot in Foggy Bottom (no kidding), and the lines were out the door.  But Eric had a reservation, and we were ushered to a round banquette as if we were hot stuff.  Though the house-made cocktails were an obvious attraction for the younger set, we went with some appealing and startlingly inexpensive wines: a Stag’s Leap Hands of Time Chardonnay 2010, and an Egeo Verdejo 2010, from Rueda.
We were hungry, so we went right for the mains: Low Country shrimp and grits, hot with spicy sausage, and an order of Southern pan-fried chicken and waffles (buttered and syruped) with roasted root vegetables and mac 'n' cheese.  Again, fine tastes and abundant portions for very little money.  No wonder the place is crowded.
