Saturday March 16
Today we flew to Our Nation's
Capital, where Barbara is going to do some national (or notional) service, and Holt is going
to give a lecture. We started off our stay with
our friends Lisa and John, who took us off to Mount Vernon for the afternoon.
The kitchen, with its smoke jack and various rotisseries, was one of
the most interesting parts, other than our lunch at the Mount Vernon Inn, where
we had a taste of peanut and chestnut soup (like Jif, really), and a savory pair
of stews: lamb and spinach, and duck and sausage cassoulet.
For dinner, Lisa made a dish from her
days at the Albright in East Jerusalem: chicken musakhan, with thin-sliced red onions, chicken tenders, and plenty
of sumac, on a base of pita bread.
We drank a rich red Rhone wine
(rather than Taybeh beer), and had a chunky (rather than Israeli-style minced) cucumber,
tomato and avocado salad for accompaniment.
A delicious blast (no! not a blast!) from the past, so thanks, Lisa and John!
