Monday March 18
Holt gave a great lecture on
Pompeiian graffiti out at George Mason University, after which Martin Winkler
kindly took us all out for beers (thanks, Martin!). So we got home late and a little beery, and
John shepherded us over to a neighborhood dive, Franklins, to bolster us with
food (and a little more beer).
(Thanks to Mr. Ray at Road to Fermentation for the picture.)
Franklins (no apostrophe, according to the website) is an amazing place, attached to
a general store filled with funny chatchkes (Eng: knickknacks) and every type of joke object.
After browsing and laughing, we headed
upstairs to graze on a platter of buttermilk-soaked, beer-battered onion rings,
with horseradish cream and a dusting of Old Bay seasoning, while we decided on what
we really wanted to eat. In the
meantime, the beer theme continued, with the favorite being Twisted Turtle Pale
Ale.
We finally settled on a huge slice
of bacon-wrapped meatloaf with spicy ketchup glaze, chipotle mashed sweet
potatoes, and bright green beans; and hanger steak with red pepper annatto
sauce, yellow rice, and black beans. All
the portions were generous and the food carefully cooked, the sort of diner
fare that you used to love everywhere and now can find nowhere.
The place is open late, has
friendly service, good food, fresh brewed beer, and lots of funny toys. We wish we had Franklins in our town.
