Thursday 30 January
This was our first dinner in Hall at
Christ Church, a ceremony that is hedged about with traditions, transgressing
any of which could result in anything from sheer embarrassment to being
debagged or dunked in Mercury (the latter, we're told, results in being instantly
Sent Down). But contrary to our fears,
everyone from dons down to servers was kind about showing us where to go and
what to do, and Holt looked very elegant in his black gown (though he hesitated
to take a selfie on the spiral stone stairs up to Hall).
Though this wasn't a very
special night, we enjoyed a sort of surf-and turf: "Tempura Battered Tiger
Prawns with Avocado, Mango and Parmesan Salad with Sweet Chilli Dressing"
for starters, and "Rib Eye Steak with Mushroom Gratin, BĂ©arnaise Sauce,
Jenger Chips (by which I think they meant Jenga - the fries were piled up into
a tower, like the game), French Beans (wrapped in prosciutto), Oven Blushed
Tomato and Onion Rings" for mains.
The prawns were probably frozen, and the little round steak was pretty
tough, but as some of the other diners told us, it was on the level of decent
pub food.
Pudding (which is distinct from
Dessert) was "Rhubarb Crumble and Sorbet with Sauce Anglaise" - and
then we rose, said a second grace, and retreated to take coffee and drinks in
the Senior Common Room.
And we needed them.
