Layover in New York City: Red Egg

Saturday 20 July
After that long flight, Andi and Joel were incredibly kind: they not only picked us up at 6 AM and drove us to their home near South Street Seaport, but let us snooze and shower until we were near-human again.  Then we all celebrated our return to the USA with brunch at 121 Fulton - mimosas, American coffee, buttermilk pancakes and crabcakes benedict - and a tour of the James Turrell Show at the Guggenheim.

That evening, when we'd rested from the resultant eye glut and leg ache, we went out to Red Egg.  They serve dim sum all day, so we started with some char siu bao, shrimp dumplings, and cold "octopus" - actually cuttlefish - in sweet bean sauce.  And tea, of course.
Our mains were beef cubes (really strips) with chives; the meat was very tender and flavorful, so that was our favorite.  A couple of selections (shrimp with cashews, and pan-fried noodles with pork) turned out rather bland, though the sautéed scallops with garlic sauce were slightly more lively.
And for dessert, who could resist pastries (cannoli and fruit tarts) from Ferrara's, just a block or two away?
