Wednesday 3 September
Our friend and former Tytus
scholar Hugh Bowden came in to give a talk, and Duncan took us and Peter out to
Primavista to celebrate and reward the speaker.
We opened the festivities with a Vernaccia,
Tenuta le Calcinaie 2012. It made a good
backing for the opening courses, one of which was
ravioli stuffed with spinach,
ricotta and walnuts, with walnut pesto and gorgonzola; the other, steamed mussels
in white wine garlic butter, rosemary, and olive oil, with garlic croutons.
Our mains were slices of seared lamb
loin with a parmesan polenta cupcake, asparagus (mainly stems), gorgonzola, and
arugula in a red wine-balsamic reduction; and "tonight's veal," which
was scaloppine with crab and mushrooms in cream sauce with another polenta
cupcake (everybody got one) and green beans.
With this course we had a Pinot Noir, Cline Cellars 2010.
The food was solid rather than
stellar, but Primavista still has the attentive service and the magical twilight view
that make it worth a visit.
