Sunday 31 August
We haven't been to Cincinnati's famous Labor Day fireworks display for a long time.
But when family comes in from out of town, you do the things you don't
ordinarily do.
Holt booked us a table at
Mitchell's Fish Market, which turned out to be the perfect spot. It was right opposite the fireworks
barge, between the two bridges from which fireworks would be shot. And they placed us right at the edge of their
terrace, so that our view couldn't have been better. The weather had turned sunny and cool, so
dinner on a terrace was what we would have wanted even if there were no
festivities, or crowds to watch along the levee, or anticipation of big things going boom.
For openers, we went halfsies on
Maine lobster bisque and the "famous" house salad with carrots,
cucumbers, grape tomatoes, pine nuts, and dates (!) with poppy seed
vinaigrette.
Mains were a fillet of salmon on
its own little cedar plank, served with zucchini, asparagus, goat cheese, and
sun-dried tomato pesto; and one skewer of three grilled scallops and one of
four grilled shrimp, with good mashed redskin potatoes and some assorted vedge.
And then - the fireworks. A full half hour of gape-worthy pyrotechnic
splendor, in a dark sky still enough to preserve the explosive smoke like grey
lace, and then blow it gently up the river.
And we could barely hear the 80s music behind it, which made it perfect.
Our timing couldn't be beat. After-fireworks dessert (key lime pie and chocolate layer
cake) and coffee helped us while away the hour it took for the crowds to clear a
bit. And then we drove home, for some Graeter's peach and dark chocolate truffle gelato in their own cones, as a
sweet treat for a sweeter day.
