Friday 5 September
Holt brought Lauren home for
dinner, and she generously helped us finish off most of the Labor day
leftovers.
We started with white wine,
whetting our appetites with pickled daikon, olives, and roasted peppers on
crackers. Then we came to the table for
a mixed bag of everything.
For example, we had some leftover
crabcake makings, the kernels of an ear of corn, and two boiled potatoes - so
we mashed it all together, made patties, breaded them in panko, and fried them
crisp and brown.
With the leftover tonnato sauce,
we made macaroni salad: tossed the sauce with 8 oz. of cooked and cooled elbow
macaroni and half a chopped red pepper, plus a chopped scallion or two.
We also mashed up a mess of whitefish
salad, to pile on Holt's Italian bran bread.
Even easier was a platter of ripe tomatoes
anointed with basil oil, which went nicely with white anchovies from Dean's.
We ended with the last of Saturday's
blueberries and nectarines, topped with Graeter's peach ice cream, and enlivened
with sips of Lauren's fine gift of Jefferson "ridiculously
small-batch" bourbon. Thanks,
Lauren - and next time, we hope that Zac can come too.
