Tuesday 11 March
We had traveled up to the University of Nottingham to give talks for the Classics Department, and they kindly took us
out for dinner afterward at a favorite local spot.
There were ten of us, so we were
able to order a house special set banquet (the "G" menu). After a pause while we drank beer and tea and
nibbled shrimp crackers, dishes began to appear, and they didn't stop for about
an hour and a half.
The standouts were hot (in both
senses) king prawns - truly large size, for once - in chilli bean sauce, aromatic
crispy duck with pancakes, and excellent scallops, for once without their
water-chestnut doppelgangers. There were so
many dishes that we actually left a little food on one or two - a sign of
politeness, we know, but we can rarely keep ourselves from licking the plates
at good Chinese restaurants, and this was one.
