Thursday 3 October
We headed out to the Anchor with
Valeria, Steven, and Tim, who'd just given a talk on Tacitus. It was warm enough to sit out on the back
patio, which is wonderful for early October.
We started out with their draft
beer, which we thought was going to be IPA but turned out to be
Oktoberfest. Still okay, but less hoppy,
and we like hoppy.
Then we got six fresh oysters,
nicely served with fresh-grated horseradish as well as the usual cocktail sauce,
and a nice bowl of PEI mussels (thanks, Canada!) steamed with shallots and
burnt orange.
Our mains were both specials of
the night. The first was a pretty whole grilled
branzino stuffed with rosemary, and served with roasted vegetables.
The second was a fillet of spot-tailed
bass high on a bed of couscous, dried apricots, and currents, featuring smears
of pomegranate molasses and deconstructed tzaziki. Both were very good, and we enjoyed picking
every piece off the branzino.
For dessert, some had the salted
caramel pudding, served in a quilted ball jar like Holt's peach cobbler in a
jar. And all of us had spoons.
