Tea and Tao

Friday 11 October
Our kiwi grad student, Chris, is a first-rate baker.  He gave us a slap-up Friday tea of beef samosas with a garlic yogurt dip, Australian lamingtons (sponge cake dipped in chocolate or strawberry icing and rolled in dried coconut) with cream, and for Sabina's birthday, a flourless (or nearly) chocolate cake with chocolate icing and white cream decoration.
Then on to an opening for the show "Realm of the Immortals," on Daoism, at the Art Museum.  With the accompaniment of thumping drums, we enjoyed a buffet of vegetable potstickers, orange chicken and teriyaki shrimp skewers, cold soba noodles in takeout containers, and meatballs with soy mustard sauce.  As well as white wine, we tried jasmine pearls and silver needle teas.
And of course, encouraged by the Eight Immortals, when we got home we acted irresponsible and had gins and tonics and Doritos (which broke Barbara's tooth, incidentally - the anthropologists are right, cereals are bad for your teeth).
