Sunday 27 January
It was a big birthday - the kind
involving a zero - for our friend Nancy, and her family threw her a birthday
party at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club.
They had a long table set up
beside the window, so we could sit under the twinkling blue lights and look out
at the rain-washed streets in the urban/sophisticated way proper to a jazz
club. Our waitron was attentive in
filling our glasses with Sean Minor Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, though by the time
we got there hungry academics had already scorched through most of the appetizers,
including a very tasty (judging from what we could still scrape out of the
bowl) spinach and artichoke dip.
There were introductions,
speeches, toasts, and lots of laughs.
The two of us dined on two blackened fishes: tuna steak with wasabi
sauce on mixed greens with peppers and a touch of seaweed salad, and salmon with
etoufée sauce, dirty rice and broccoli.
Finally we grabbed our glasses and
a nice slice of birthday cake and filed into the Rosemary Clooney Room to sit up on high chairs, and enjoy
the jazz stylings of the Arturo O'Farrill trio.
Happy birthday, Nancy - and thanks
to all the Felson family and friends!
