Tuesday 7 July
Zac has finally been able to move
to Cincinnati and join Lauren in a new apartment in Northside, so they kindly
invited us over to celebrate.
It is our tradition to bring bread
and salt to friends' new home, so Holt made a combination of the two: rosemary focaccia, slutted up with red onions and
Moroccan olives on one side and just Himalayan pink salt on the other (we also
brought some smoked salmon and horseradish cream cheese, because after all, the
salt side needed slutting up too).
To go
with this appetizer, our hosts whipped up a batch of Mt. Vernon cocktails (they
are cocktail experts, and make their own bitters as well as having all the appropriate pretty glassware).
Lauren and Zac were also our
mentors on Croatian food, sending us to Konoba Kod Joze for "green noodles
with sea fruits." So we were delighted that they made that recipe tonight,
using the freshest clams and mussels you can get in this landlocked region, not to mention Zac's homemade spinach pasta.
The meal was accompanied by favorite
wines they had brought back from their own travels, and followed up with a tomato
and avocado green salad, to freshen the palate and tamp it all down.
They topped off an already
fabulous meal by serving cups of Zac's own salted caramel gelato, along with some
of the choicest bourbon and rye whiskies we've tasted.
So thanks for a wonderful evening, L&Z - and you can have our
garden lavender for gelato any time you're ready!
